WELCOME: –

CALL TO WORSHIP

            Let us worship God as we get ready to celebrate Christmas.

                        We remember that God is with us always in our hearts,

 so come, let us sing with joy.

SONG –

The following song will be sung in the Church: ‘AWAKE BEFORE SUNRISE’

Words Bill Bennett Music David Dell ©1990

From Christmas in the Shed published by Leigh Newton and Tanya Wittwer.

Unfortunately, there is no video clip for this song, but the words are printed below:

1. Awake before sunrise, before heat of day

Get ready for Christmas, we must be away.

Come worship the Christ child, our shepherd our head;

The woolshed his dwelling, the wool bale his bed.

2. The shepherds go muster, the dogs hunt away;

With dust and the barking, it’s shearing all day.

Come worship the Christ child, our shepherd our head;

The woolshed his dwelling, the wool bale his bed.

3. A breather for smoko, a time to give pride

To Jesus our shepherd, our saviour our guide.

Come worship the Christ child, our shepherd our head;

The woolshed his dwelling, the wool bale his bed.

4.  On horseback, on hilltop, creation below;

God’s beauty, our freedom, in Christ may we know.

Come worship the Christ child, our shepherd our head;

The woolshed his dwelling, the wool bale his bed.

CANDLE LITURGY – ADVENT 3

Narrator: Today we light the candle of Joy.

[Light the candle of Hope and the candle of Peace, then light the candle of Joy.]

A reading from Matthew 1:

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place.  His mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit.  Joseph was a man who always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the engagement privately.  While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife.  For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived.  She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus – because he will save his people from their sins.”

 Now, all of this happened in order to make true what the Lord had said through the Prophet,

 “A virgin will become pregnant and have a son, and he will be called Immanuel” (which means ‘God is with us’  (Isaiah 7: 14)

So, when Joseph woke up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to.

Henri Nouwen writes:

Our lives are destined to become like the life of Jesus.  The whole purpose of Jesus’ ministry is to bring us to the House of his Father.  Not only did Jesus come into the World to free us from the bonds of sin and death; he also came to lead us into the intimacy of his divine life.  It is difficult for us to imagine what this means, for we tend to emphasize the distance between Jesus and ourselves.  We see Jesus as the all-knowing and all-powerful Son of God who is unreachable for us sinful, broken human beings.  But in thinking this way, we forget that Jesus came to give us his own life.  He came to lift us up into loving community with the Father.

Only when we recognize the radical purpose of Jesus’ ministry will we be able to understand the meaning of the spiritual life.  Everything that belongs to Jesus is given for us to receive.  All that Jesus does we may also do.  That is the underlying reason why Jesus told his Disciple at the Last Supper:

“I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”  (John 15:11)

[Henri J.M. Nouwen, You are the Beloved] quoted in Daily Mail List 06 December 2022

Rejoice!  It’s Christmas!   (Helen Steiner Rice in Loving Thoughts P93)

May the holy remembrance

Of the first Christmas Day

Br our reassurance

Christ is not far away.

For on Christmas he came

To walk here on Earth

So let us find joy

In the news of his birth.

And let us find comfort

And strength for each day

In knowing that Christ

Walked the same Earthly way

So he knows all our needs

And he hears every prayer.

And he keeps all his children

Always safe in his care,

And whenever we’re troubled

And lost in despair,

We have but to seek him

And ask him in prayer,

To guide and direct us

And help us to bear

Our sickness and sorrow

Our worry and care.

So once more at Christmas

Let the whole world rejoice

In the knowledge he answers

Every prayer that we voice.

Let us pray.

  Jesus, as we celebrate your birth, may our hearts would be filled with joy.  May this holiday season would be a time of happiness and love, a time when we are thankful for your blessings upon us, a time when we are thankful for family and friends.  May we be drawn closer to each other and to You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

 INTRODUCTION

Come, Jesus, and fill us with joy

Isaiah presents a beautiful image of a time of restoration and joy for God’s people. The dry and barren wilderness will bloom, waters will break forth, God’s people will be healed and God will create a safe highway for his people to return home.

For many, this is a particularly joyful time of year. On this Rejoicing Sunday, the Old Testament reading offers us a joyous vision of renewal while the Gospel centres on joy being given in a place of questioning or despair. May we think about how we may be bearers as well as receivers of the Lord’s joy.

In this joyful season of parties and celebrations,
we continue our Advent journey
and celebrate the joy that God gives to us
through the gifts of his creation,
his Son, the Lord Jesus, and his love.
Let us celebrate with joy and singing.

PRAYER

We pray together

Come Jesus, as the prophet promised,
come Jesus, fill us with joy.
Come, that the desert will rejoice
and flowers bloom in the wilderness.
Come Jesus, so that those who feel vulnerable
and sad can shout for joy, blossom and be glad in you
.
Amen

SONG

www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCYdLA8qR5c&t=22s

With joy in our hearts and the full knowledge, that in spite of ourselves God has our backs, we can confidently come to Him in words of confession.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we confess that we fail and falter because we get
all wrapped up in the trivialities of life.
So often we look for something better to come our way,
ignoring what we already have,
not using it wisely for the good of all.
We confess we forget to preach the good news to the poor;
to those who don’t know their need to confess;
to those who don’t know that Christmas is about
the birth of the Christ-child;
to those who don’t know your Spirit within;
to those who do not catch glimpses of glory and light
and joy in abundance.
Advent God, forgive us we pray and bless our journey.
Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

The Lord God, the Holy One, the Almighty, the Redeemer,
the giver of life, hears our prayer and forgives our sins.
Praise be to God.
Amen.

We continue in giving thanks and prepare ourselves to hear God’s word for us today.

Thank you, God,
that in our differences and in our diversity, you are our God.

for the changes and chances and challenges that surround us;
for your constancy and the blessings we receive from those
around us;
for the Gospel words that speak of hope and joy,
light and life and love;
for the gifts you have given us in abundance;
that we can gather to celebrate your coming.
Thank you that in hope and expectation we can shout:
‘Come Jesus, fill us with joy!’

Help us to hear your word and message for us today.

May we respond in faith and action.

FIRST BIBLE READING

Isaiah 35

Joy of the Redeemed

35 The desert and the parched land will be glad;
    the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom;
    it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
    the splendour of Carmel and Sharon;
they will see the glory of the Lord,
    the splendour of our God.

Strengthen the feeble hands,
    steady the knees that give way;
say to those with fearful hearts,
    “Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
    he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
    he will come to save you.”

Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
    and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
Then will the lame leap like a deer,
    and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
    and streams in the desert.
The burning sand will become a pool,
    the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay,
    grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.

And a highway will be there;
    it will be called the Way of Holiness;
    it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
    wicked fools will not go about on it.
No lion will be there,
    nor any ravenous beast;
    they will not be found there.
But only the redeemed will walk there,
10     and those the Lord has rescued will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Your Word is a lamp to our feet.

And a light to our path

SECOND READING

Luke 1:40 – 55

46 And Mary sang:

“My soul glorifies the Lord
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
    of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49     for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
    holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
    he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
    but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
    but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
    just as he promised our ancestors.”

May Your Word live in us

            And bear much fruit to Your Glory

MESSAGE

It is important to tell the biblical narrative of the First Christmas. The long- awaited prophecy of Isaiah to come to fulfilment.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) He will be also called Immanuel – God with us.

Luke’s Christmas narrative, succinctly told, invites us to wonder about the Whys and Wherefores.

            The angel makes the outrageous announces to Mary that she will have a baby by the Holy Spirit.

We read Mary filled with the Holy Spirit, spontaneously responds to the great events that are taking place in her life.

            There is a reassurance to Joseph to continue the engagement and stick by Mary as they journey to Bethlehem in accordance with the Roman rule.

Here we find that, although Jesus is born in the humblest of circumstances, there is much rejoicing of the heavenly angelic choir as the news is announced.

Noy only is prophecy to be fulfilled locally amongst God’s people, but the observance of the scholarly astronomers from the far east and their subsequent visit indicate that this event has worldwide significance.

The Birth of Jesus, Emmanuel, is not bound by time and space. God is calling  us, today to become part of this life changing narrative.

We are called us to worship an amazing God who chooses to impart His Glory  into our lives..

This is the story, “the good news” story is told throughout the world this day and will surprise many as it did 2000 years ago.

In the Strathpine Shopping Centre, out of all the Seasons Celebrations one tiny display stand near the Post Office shines brightest. It holds a rather beautiful Christmas Nativity scene with all characters of the Christmas narrative.

On the reverse side of the display will be found the Isaiah 9:6 verse

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”.

The sign goes on to say, “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever”

This tiny display that shouts loudly above chaotic shopping around it.

The type of kingship Jesus is to fulfil is hinted in the humble beginnings of the stable. We must explore further the whole gospels to find out the type of kingship Jesus would display.

And the letters of the followers in the New Testament to find out how we may respond to the gospel call. Here we discover that God works his miracles on the inside, making the changes that occur in our lives as we put our trust in him.

The phrase “as we look at things on the outside, God looks at the heart” comes from 1 Samuel 16:7, which states, “For the Lord does not see as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”.

            From a human perspective: people often focus on outward qualities like looks, height, status, or possessions to form judgments. God’s judgment is based on a deeper level.

            The Bible says, “for the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart”. God sees the sincerity of our faith, our motivations, and our inner desires. This principle is an encouragement for us to look beyond the surface when evaluating others and to focus on our own inner character and intentions. Our true value comes from within, not from an artificial face we present to others.

            And so we are called to look at our lives and those we meet from a different perspective.

            Precious gold is found in the masses of worthless rubble. The gold is found and extracted through hard work. It is worth the seeking, the sweat and the pain and when it is found the shout of “Eureka!!!!! I have found it!!!!” will resonate around the ridges. Moments of great joy.

            Our faith in God, through Jesus, bring a joy that is much greater. It is a joy that, unlike keeping the riches found in the goldmine, causes us to go beyond ourselves and share those God-given joyful riches with others.

            So we pray, giving thanks to God for His shepherding care, learning to love Him more, learning to love others as we love ourselves and be open to be surprised by God’s Love, Joy, Peace and Hope.

Leo Tolstoy translated into English the story written by Reuben Sillens called  Papa Panov’s Special Christmas inspired by the following verse.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

It was Christmas Eve and although it was still afternoon, lights had begun to appear in the shops and houses of the little Russian village, for the short winter day was nearly over. Excited children scurried indoors and now only muffled sounds of chatter and laughter escaped from closed shutters.

Old Papa Panov, the village shoemaker, stepped outside his shop to take one last look around. The sounds of happiness, the bright lights and the faint but delicious smells of Christmas cooking reminded him of past Christmas times when his wife had still been alive and his own children little. Now they had gone. His usually cheerful face, with the little laughter wrinkles behind the round steel spectacles, looked sad now. But he went back indoors with a firm step, put up the shutters and set a pot of coffee to heat on the charcoal stove. Then, with a sigh, he settled in his big armchair.

Papa Panov did not often read, but tonight he pulled down the big old family Bible and, slowly tracing the lines with one forefinger, he read again the Christmas story. He read how Mary and Joseph, tired by their journey to Bethlehem, found no room for them at the inn, so that Mary’s little baby was born in the cowshed.

“Oh, dear, oh, dear!” exclaimed Papa Panov, “if only they had come here! I would have given them my bed and I could have covered the baby with my patchwork quilt to keep him warm.”

He read on about the wise men who had come to see the baby Jesus, bringing him splendid gifts. Papa Panov’s face fell. “I have no gift that I could give him,” he thought sadly.

Then his face brightened. He put down the Bible, got up and stretched his long arms t the shelf high up in his little room. He took down a small, dusty box and opened it. Inside was a perfect pair of tiny leather shoes. Papa Panov smiled with satisfaction. Yes, they were as good as he had remembered — the best shoes he had ever made. “I should give him those,” he decided, as he gently put them away and sat down again.

He was feeling tired now, and the further he read the sleepier he became. The print began to dance before his eyes so that he closed them, just for a minute. In no time at all Papa Panov was fast asleep.

And as he slept he dreamed. He dreamed that someone was in his room and he knew at once, as one does in dreams, who the person was. It was Jesus.

“You have been wishing that you could see me, Papa Panov.” he said kindly, “then look for me tomorrow. It will be Christmas Day and I will visit you. But look carefully, for I shall not tell you who I am.”

When at last Papa Panov awoke, the bells were ringing out and a thin light was filtering through the shutters. “Bless my soul!” said Papa Panov. “It’s Christmas Day!”

He stood up and stretched himself for he was rather stiff. Then his face filled with happiness as he remembered his dream. This would be a very special Christmas after all, for Jesus was coming to visit him. How would he look? Would he be a little baby, as at that first Christmas? Would he be a grown man, a carpenter — or the great King that he is, God’s Son?

He must watch carefully the whole day through so that he recognized him however he came.

Papa Panov put on a special pot of coffee for his Christmas breakfast, took down the shutters and looked out of the window. The street was deserted, no one was stirring yet. No one except the road sweeper. He looked as miserable and dirty as ever, and well he might! Whoever wanted to work on Christmas Day — and in the raw cold and bitter freezing mist of such a morning?

Papa Panov opened the shop door, letting in a thin stream of cold air. “Come in!” he shouted across the street cheerily. “Come in and have some hot coffee to keep out the cold!”

The sweeper looked up, scarcely able to believe his ears. He was only too glad to put down his broom and come into the warm room. His old clothes steamed gently in the heat of the stove and he clasped both red hands round the comforting warm mug as he drank.

Papa Panov watched him with satisfaction, but every now and them his eyes strayed to the window. It would never do to miss his special visitor.

“Expecting someone?” the sweeper asked at last. So Papa Panov told him about his dream.

“Well, I hope he comes,” the sweeper said, “you’ve given me a bit of Christmas cheer I never expected to have. I’d say you deserve to have your dream come true.” And he actually smiled.

When he had gone, Papa Panov put on cabbage soup for his dinner, then went to the door again, scanning the street. He saw no one. But he was mistaken. Someone was coming.

The girl walked so slowly and quietly, hugging the walls of shops and houses, that it was a while before he noticed her. She looked very tired and she was carrying something. As she drew nearer he could see that it was a baby, wrapped in a thin shawl.

There was such sadness in her face and in the pinched little face of the baby, that Papa Panov’s heart went out to them.

“Won’t you come in,” he called, stepping outside to meet them. “You both need a warm seat by the fire and a rest.”

The young mother let him shepherd her indoors and to the comfort of the armchair. She gave a big sigh of relief.

“I’ll warm some milk for the baby,” Papa Panov said, “I’ve had children of my own — I can feed her for you.” He took the milk from the stove and carefully fed the baby from a spoon, warming her tiny feet by the stove at the same time.

“She needs shoes,” the cobbler said.

But the girl replied, “I can’t afford shoes, I’ve got no husband to bring home money. I’m on my way to the next village to get work.”

A sudden thought flashed through Papa Panov’s mind. He remembered the little shoes he had looked at last night. But he had been keeping those for Jesus. He looked again at the cold little feet and made up his mind.

“Try these on her,” he said, handing the baby and the shoes to the mother. The beautiful little shoes were a perfect fit. The girl smiled happily and the baby gurgled with pleasure.

“You have been so kind to us,” the girl said, when she got up with her baby to go. “May all your Christmas wishes come true!”

But Papa Panov was beginning to wonder if his very special Christmas wish would come true. Perhaps he had missed his visitor? He looked anxiously up and down the street. There were plenty of people about but they were all faces that he recognized. There were neighbours going to call on their families.

ey nodded and smiled and wished him Happy Christmas! Or beggars — and Papa Panov hurried indoors to fetch them hot soup and a generous hunk of bread, hurrying out again in case he missed the Important Stranger.

All too soon the winter dusk fell. When Papa Panov next went to the door and strained his eyes, he could no longer make out the passers-by. Most were home and indoors by now anyway. He walked slowly back into his room at last, put up the shutters, and sat down wearily in his armchair.

So it had been just a dream after all. Jesus had not come.

Then all at once he knew that he was no longer alone in the room.

This was not dream for he was wide awake. At first he seemed to see before his eyes the long stream of people who had come to him that day. He saw again the old road sweeper, the young mother and her baby and the beggars he had fed. As they passed, each whispered, “Didn’t you see me, Papa Panov?”

“Who are you?” he called out, bewildered.

Then another voice answered him. It was the voice from his dream — the voice of Jesus.

“I was hungry and you fed me,” he said. “I was naked and you clothed me. I was cold and you warmed me. I came to you today in everyone of those you helped and welcomed.”

Then all was quiet and still. Only the sound of the big clock ticking. A great peace and happiness seemed to fill the room, overflowing Papa Panov’s heart until he wanted to burst out singing and laughing and dancing with joy.

“So he did come after all!” was all that he said.

Please join with me and say that familiar verse we know as the Prayer of St Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Mary did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

2. Mary did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God

Mary, did you know?
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb
3. Mary did you know
That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the Great I Am

Oh, Mary, did you know?

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

O Lord our God,

this is our prayer.

So many memories of people and places flash through our thinking as we move through Advent and prepare for Christmas, many happy memories intertwined with sadness and loss.

We pray today for those who have been part of our lives, our loving, our living, our growing and maturing; for those who have died we give thanks; and for those who are living we pray with gratitude, that they may find comfort, love, purpose, joy, hope and meaning this Christmas.

O Lord our God,
this is our prayer.

For family and friends who are walking through Advent uncertain what Christmas celebrations they should arrange or embrace or cancel; for those who face Christmas alone or ill, sold or hungry, fearful of the now and more fearful of the future hardships and pain.

O Lord our God,
this is our prayer.

Finally, we pray for ourselves that we may have eyes to see need, mouths to speak words of comfort, smiles to say ‘I love you’ when hugs are out of bounds. May we O God be your eyes, your ears, your mouth to those who share this Advent with us and those whose lives touch ours; may we be the bringers, the signs of ‘good news’ to them.

O Lord our God,
this is our prayer.

These are our prayers for all your people.
Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your Kingdom come.

Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever.

Amen.

Sun gleams bright, hearts are light – Merry, merry Christmas

Bells ring out, children shout – Merry, merry, merry Christmas

Sheep in fold, shine like gold – As the day is dawning

Riding by, stockmen cry – Welcome Christmas morning

Golden day, when we say – Merry, merry Christmas

In the street, where we meet – Merry, merry, merry Christmas

And with pride, far and wide, – All our homes adorning

Earth and sky, sound the cry, – Welcome Christmas morning

So with joy, girl and boy – Sing with us together

On this morn, Christ was born – Merry, merry, merry Christmas

Raise the song, loud and strong – In the shining weather

Joy bells ring, Christ is King – Merry, merry, merry Christmas
